Planning for the Future
Let’s be honest: college and career planning can be tough. Whether you have a kindergartner or a high school senior, it is important to begin the process as soon as possible.
The need for students to plan for college or a career while still in school is clear. Thankfully, beginning in the 2019-20 school year, all incoming 9th grade Oklahoma public school students will complete an Individual Career Academic Plan, often referred to as “ICAP” before graduation. What is an Individual Career Academic Plan (ICAP)?
The term ICAP refers to a process that helps students prepare for life after high school. During the ICAP process, your child will participate in a variety of academic and career development activities.
ICAP is not just another graduation checklist – it is student-driven and student-owned. This plan will empower them to:
- Understand their own interests, strengths, values and learning styles
- Create a vision of their future
- Develop individual goals
- Prepare a personal plan for achieving their vision and goals
- Gain workplace experience through internships, job shadowing or pre-apprenticeships
What Can Parents Expect?
With the help of teachers and school counselors, you and your child will access and contribute to your child’s ICAP using a free online tool provided by your child’s school. This tool will contain career quizzes, scholarship information, resume-writing tips and many other activities and resources designed to prepare your child for the road ahead.
Although ICAPs are a graduation requirement beginning in the ninth grade, students and families are encouraged to begin this process as early as elementary school. Explore the links below to learn how you can help your child make the most of the ICAP experience.
